Next generation of newspaper plates extends chemistry life

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 9—To keep pace with the demanding requirements facing newspaper printers, the new KODAK THERMALNEWS Gold digital plate offers fast imaging speeds and improved resolution. Specifically designed to meet the needs for premium newspaper printing and color printing of flyers, inserts and commercial projects, the newest generation of digital plates from Kodak launches at IfraExpo in Amsterdam, Netherlands, taking place Oct. 9-12.

THERMALNEWS Gold plates feature resolution of 2 percent to 98 percent at 150 lpi and 1 percent to 99 percent at 120 lpi. The plates enable 36 micron stochastic printing under newspaper conditions and 25 micron stochastic printing for commercial applications. On press, THERMALNEWS Gold plates offer highly stable newspaper platemaking, with rapid roll ups, quick restarts and excellent ink/water balance. Outstanding ink receptivity increases pressroom productivity and the plates offer a superior run length, rated for 200,000-plus impressions.

According to Roland Schwarz, Technical Sales Advisor for Reiff Zeitungsdruck GmbH, based in Offenburg, Germany, his company was able to easily migrate to THERMALNEWS Gold plates while handling print jobs for newspapers and commercial projects, including catalogs of up to 2,000 pages.

“The KODAK THERMALNEWS Gold plate is imaged faster, using less power. We have also noticed a dramatic increase in print quality and run length,” Schwarz said. “Thanks to the THERMALNEWS Gold plate, we were able to migrate effortlessly from a 100 lpi to a 120 lpi screen, giving us vital clout in a fiercely contested market. Depending on which paper we use, the new KODAK thermal plate manages between 175,000 and 325,000 impressions.”

“Newspaper printers worldwide are turning to digital solutions to improve productivity and quality. The KODAK THERMALNEWS Gold plate is our newest innovation to help our customers compete effectively and profit from the opportunities in the market,” said Doug Edwards, General Manager and Vice President, Prepress Consumables, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. “THERMALNEWS Gold plates offer quick processing speeds with the crisp resolution needed for quality printing.”

THERMALNEWS Gold plates deliver newspaper printers wider latitude in use for ease of set up and system stability. The plates use a clean working negative developer in an easy to maintain dedicated processing system, providing longer chemistry life and cleaner processing. The compact plate processor frees up valuable production floor space.

“THERMALNEWS Gold plates meet two critical requirements of deadline sensitive newspapers. First, the crisp, clean dots offer high productivity and quality reproduction. Secondly, the stability and durability of the plates, along with the improvements made to KODAK 980 plate developer chemistry life in the processor, means more up time, less maintenance and lower operating costs,” said Kevin Cazabon, Kodak EAMER Regional Consumables Director.

The THERMALNEWS Gold plate debuts during the 10th anniversary observance of Kodak’s introduction of thermal digital plate technology. Kodak’s continued commitment to advancing digital computer-to-plate solutions is enhancing quality and productivity for printers around the world.
