Kodak Launches New Certified Process for Color Confirmation on the VERIS Proofer

ROCHESTER, NY, July 28, 2005 - Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group (GCG) today announced a new Certified Process for the VERIS proofer from Kodak. The Certified Process for Color Confirmation checks that the proof complies with the color standards specified for that job, helping printers and print buyers communicate and confirm color expectations, thereby avoiding costly errors before going to press.

Confirming Color

The VERIS proofer now supports two certified processes: the well-established Certified Process for Proofing and the new Certified Process for Color Confirmation. The latest process allows customers to work with any industry color standard, or to define their own standard. The Certified Process for Color Confirmation then prints the appropriate color-managed color test strip on the proof, confirms that the specified color tolerances have been achieved, and prints a proof-specific certification label with the Certified Process stamp for visible confirmation of correct color. It also confirms that the correct profile was used and that the proofer was correctly calibrated. This provides assurance well beyond what can be achieved by checking the color test strip alone.

“This is a significant new feature for the VERIS proofer,” said Meike Wesseling, VERIS product manager. “By measuring the actual color on the proof and comparing it to what was specified for the job, prepress operators and print buyers have absolute assurance that the proof is accurate. It also provides systematic color data proof-by-proof that can be tracked and monitored as part of the production control process.”

Confirming the Proofing Process

The Certified Process for Proofing has always been included in every VERIS proofer and is gaining customer acceptance worldwide as a means to achieve process control during proof production. The Certified Process for Proofing checks that the right steps are done in the right order using the right data, thereby eliminating common human errors before the proof is printed. Specifically, it checks that the correct ink and media are loaded, that the color profile has not been modified and matches the proofing condition specified, and that the corresponding calibration is still valid. If all checks are met, the Certified Process stamp is printed on the proof for visible confirmation that the proof has been correctly produced, together with a caption providing the critical proofing parameters used.

About Certified Processes

Certified Processes bring automation and process control to prepress. Certified Processes automatically check that the right steps are performed in the right order with the right data, and if so, the Certified Process mark is added to the specific output. In this way, customers know that output has indeed been processed according to specification, without the need for a detailed inspection to check that every step had been properly applied. Certified Processes were launched several years ago with the release of the VERIS proofer, and now several Kodak products feature a Certified Process.

The Certified Process for Proofing comes standard with every VERIS proofer. The new Certified Process for Color Confirmation is now available worldwide as an upgradeable option with the latest VERIS software. For more information, visit the VERIS proofer webpage.
